Farewell Professor Hyman
By: Hailie Cadeau & Mac Steckler
After seven years serving as a Professor of Sport Management, Mark Hyman, will serve as the University of Maryland’s George Solomon Endowed Chair in Sports Journalism beginning July 1st.
Within the GW School of Business, he taught courses in Sport Media and Communication, Sport Law, Sport Globalization, Sport and Event Management, and Sport Video Production and Editing. He has brought notable guest speakers to campus, and moderated The GW Business of Sports Podcast.
Hyman will direct the college’s Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism, as well as teach sports journalism classes. He will replace George Solomon, Povich Center founding director and former Washington Post sports editor.
The Povich Center provides Merrill College students and professional journalists to participate in and develop journalistic skills, supports, research and analysis, and professional development.
From a class trip to China in 2015 where 14 GW students spoke the language of “playing catch” with young baseball players in Wuxi, to endless guest speakers talking with students, to all the students and colleagues who made the job enjoyable, Professor Hyman has many fond memories of his time at GW.
Professor Hyman holds a special place in the heart of members of the GWU Sports Business Association, and the greater Management Department. He has helped many students grow into better people and prepared them for careers in the sports business world.
The Sports Business Association will miss Professor Hyman and his dedication throughout the School of Business. We wish him the best of luck at UMD and his future endeavors!
